The building serves as the headquarters for the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Southern Jurisdiction, U.S.A.
It was designed by architect John Russell Pope and constructed between 1911 and 1915.
The design is Neo-Classical and features two large sphinxes guarding the entrance, representing wisdom and power.
It is located at 1733 16th Street, N.W., about a mile north of the White House.
