The image is a vintage postcard of the Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge and Restaurant in Asheville, North Carolina.
It was Connecticut's first Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge and Restaurant complex, featuring more than eighty guest rooms, a ranch-style gate lodge, swimming pool, and restaurant.
Howard Johnson's was known for its distinctive orange roofs and spires, which made its locations easily recognizable to travelers.
The business was a pioneer in the hospitality industry, being one of the first motel chains on "the strip" of many developing highways.
The company was founded in 1925 and grew to be the largest restaurant organization in the U.S. by the mid-1960s, largely due to the rise of the automobile and the need for consistent roadside lodging and food.
