The Bangor House was built between 1833 and 1835 and was one of the nation's early high-class "palace hotels".
It was designed by architect Charles Bryant.
Many famous people, including Teddy Roosevelt and Ulysses S. Grant, stayed at the hotel during its operation.
The building was later converted into an apartment complex for the elderly and people with disabilities and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
