Keesler AFB was activated in June 1941 and named in honor of Second Lt. Samuel Reeves Keesler, Jr., an aviator who died in World War I.
The base is home to the 81st Training Wing, the electronics training "Center of Excellence" for the U.S. Air Force.
It is one of the largest technical training wings in the Air Education and Training Command, training over 28,000 students annually in various high-technology fields.
The base trains personnel from multiple branches of the U.S. military, including the Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.
