This vintage postcard depicts Main Street and Lafayette Square in Buffalo, New York, likely around the early 1900s.
The square, part of the city's original 1804 urban plan, was named for General Lafayette after his 1825 visit.
The prominent monument in the center is the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, an 85-foot granite column dedicated in 1884 to Civil War veterans.
The square was historically a significant civic center, where both President-elect Abraham Lincoln and former President Martin Van Buren gave speeches.
The area has changed dramatically over time; in 1912, the square was reduced in size to accommodate increased traffic, transforming it from a park into more of a thoroughfare.
The building on the northwest corner (left of the two large, similar buildings) was later replaced by the modern Tishman Building in the late 1950s.
