_____________
This is a vintage postcard featuring an aerial view of Fort Macon State Park in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. The image shows the restored 19th-century coastal pentagonal masonry fort, which is the centerpiece of one of North Carolina's most visited state parks.
Design and Purpose: Constructed between 1826 and 1834, the fort was designed to guard Beaufort Inlet and Beaufort Harbor from foreign naval threats.
Architectural Features: The structure features a central parade ground, powder magazines, counterfire rooms with cannon emplacements, and a wide moat that could be flooded with water from Bogue Sound for protection.
Military Roles: During the Civil War, it was seized by the Confederacy in 1861 but recaptured by Union forces in 1862 after a 30-day siege. It later served as a federal prison and was utilized during the Spanish-American War and World War II.
State Park Status: North Carolina purchased the fort for one dollar in 1923, and it officially opened as a state park in 1936. It was the second area acquired for the state park system.
