The building was dedicated in 1910 and is the fourth permanent capitol building since Kentucky achieved statehood in 1792.
It was designed by architect Frank Mills Andrews in the Beaux-Arts style, combining elements of classical Greek and ornate French architecture.
The exterior is faced with Indiana limestone and Vermont granite.
The richly sculpted pediment of the front portico features allegorical figures representing Kentucky and her attendants.
