This antique stereoview card titled "Heroes of the Trenches Retiring for a Rest" depicts a poignant World War I scene of weary French soldiers, known as "Poilu," retreating from the trenches after hours of relentless fighting. The image shows a group of soldiers, some with beards and gas masks, trudging through muddy terrain in front of a building. The card is a product of the Keystone View Company, a prominent publisher with offices in Meadville, Pennsylvania; New York, NY; Portland, Oregon; London, England; and Sydney, Australia.
The reverse side of the card provides a detailed narrative describing the soldiers' bravery during the Battle of the Marne from August 23 to September 6. It highlights their endurance through harsh conditions including torrential rains, mud, and extreme temperatures while fighting without pause. The text honors the courage and sacrifice of these French "Poilu" soldiers and their heroic efforts. The card is mounted on a gray curved cardboard format typical of early 20th-century stereoviews.
A valuable historical stereograph for collectors interested in World War I, military history, and vintage stereoscopic imagery. The Keystone View Co. copyright is printed on the back, authenticating its origin. This stereoview is an excellent example of early 1900s 3D photography depicting geographic and historical subjects.
