________

This is an illustration depicting Rip Van Winkle after waking from his legendary twenty-year slumber.

The character, created by Washington Irving, is a simple, good-natured Dutchman living in a village at the foot of the Catskill Mountains.
He falls asleep after sharing drinks and playing nine-pins with mysterious, ghostly figures in the mountains.
He wakes up to find his beard has grown long and white, his clothes are ragged, and twenty years have passed, during which the American Revolution took place.
The image is likely from a vintage postcard collection, a popular medium for illustrating the timeless tale.

Postcard Size: Standard Vintage 3 1/2 by 5 1/2
