This is a vintage stereoview card titled "Italian Trenches on the Austro-Italian Front," published by the Keystone View Company. The card features a historic World War I scene showing Italian trenches of resistance, built after territory was won from the enemy on the Italian front. The view number is 18711 and the title on the front reads: "Looking East on the Italian Front. In Foreground Italian Trenches of Resistance Built After Territory was Won from Enemy." The card depicts a concrete machine gun trench constructed by the Italians on the rocky ridge of the Carso, near Gorizia and Trieste.
The back of the stereoview contains detailed historical text describing the 1916 campaign of the Italians against Austrian forces, including the capture of Gorizia and the fighting on the Carso ridge. It also mentions the construction details of the trenches, including concrete and hinged iron doors for portholes. The stereoview is printed on a curved mount with text identifying the publisher locations as Meadville, PA; New York, NY; Portland, Oregon; London, England; and Sydney, Australia. This card offers an excellent glimpse into WWI military history and early 20th century stereoscopic photography.
