This image is a vintage postcard of an Alamo Plaza Courts motel, the first motel chain in the United States.
The chain was founded by Edgar Lee Torrance in Waco, Texas, in 1929.
The motels featured a distinctive Spanish Mission Revival architectural style, modeled after the famous American landmark, the Alamo.
By 1955, there were 22 locations across the southeastern U.S., most operating under common branding or architecture.
The properties attempted to distinguish themselves from other tourist courts by introducing amenities such as telephones.
