The causeway consists of two parallel bridges that cross Lake Pontchartrain.
The longer of the two spans is 23.83 miles (38.35 km) long.
The southern terminus is in Metairie, Louisiana, and the northern terminus is in Mandeville, connecting the New Orleans area with the north shore.
Construction on the original bridge began in 1955, and it opened to traffic on August 30, 1956.
