The schools were founded by Andrew Carnegie, who donated $1 million for the institution in 1900.
The institution officially opened in October 1905.
Initially, the schools offered training in various trades like blacksmithing, plumbing, and electrical work.
In 1912, the name was changed to the Carnegie Institute of Technology, and it began granting four-year degrees.
The institute merged with the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research in 1967 to form the present-day Carnegie Mellon University.
