The image is a vintage postcard featuring the Countess of Dufferin, the first steam locomotive to operate in Western Canada.
Built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia in 1872, the locomotive was an American-class (4-4-0 wheel arrangement) engine.
It was purchased by a contractor and transported by barge from Minnesota to St. Boniface in 1877 to aid in the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
The engine was named after Hariot Georgina Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, the wife of the Canadian Governor General at the time.
After its retirement, the locomotive was placed on display in William Whyte Park in Winnipeg from 1910 to 1943. It is now housed at the Winnipeg Railway Museum.
