________
The image is a vintage postcard featuring a view of the Provincetown, Massachusetts, waterfront. The prominent tower in the background is the Pilgrim Monument.
The Pilgrim Monument is the tallest all-granite structure in the U.S., standing at 252 feet.
It commemorates the first landing of the Pilgrims in 1620, where they stayed for five and a half weeks and signed the Mayflower Compact before continuing to Plymouth.
The monument was built between 1907 and 1910 on High Pole Hill, the highest point in town.
The image captures an older view of the waterfront, likely before the construction of the current municipal parking lot and the tearing down of the old Railroad Wharf in 1956.
