Construction began in 1883 and was completed in 1891, designed by architects Samuel Sloan and A.G. Bauer.
The mansion is a significant example of Victorian architecture, featuring Eastlake verandas.
The bricks used for the house were hand-made by prisoners, some of which still bear the signature of their makers.
