It is the official residence of the Governor of North Carolina and their family.
Construction began in 1883 and was completed in 1891, designed by architects Samuel Sloan and A.G. Bauer.
The mansion is a significant example of Victorian architecture, featuring Eastlake verandas.
The bricks used for the house were hand-made by prisoners, some of which still bear the signature of their makers.
