________
This vintage postcard depicts the Old City Gates in St. Augustine, Florida, a historic landmark and the entrance to the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement in the United States.
The gates were built of coquina rock in 1808.
They served as the northern terminus of the "Cubo Line," a defensive wall system designed to protect the city from British colonial expansion and pirate raids.
The gates were opened during the day for trade and locked at night to ensure the safety of the residents.
The two square pillars stand 20 feet tall and 10 feet thick.
The property became part of the National Park Service in 1933.
