The F3 was a 1,500-horsepower diesel locomotive produced by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between 1945 and 1949.
Maine Central purchased eight F3As and two F3Bs in 1947 and 1948 as their first diesel freight locomotives.
The locomotives were primarily used for pulling freight trains and were known for their reliability.
Number 681 was photographed at St. Johnsbury, Vermont, in 1964, at the western end of the railroad's Mountain Division.
