The image is a vintage postcard of Pemberton's Headquarters, also known as the Willis-Cowan House, in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
The two-story brick house, built in 1835-36 in the Greek Revival style, served as the headquarters for Confederate Lieutenant General John C. Pemberton during the Siege of Vicksburg in 1863.
It was at this location on July 3, 1863, that Pemberton held a council with his officers to discuss terms of surrender to Union Major General Ulysses S. Grant.
The house is a National Historic Landmark within the Vicksburg National Military Park.
The building is currently closed to the public while repairs are underway, with a scheduled completion in late 2025.
