The image depicts Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry transferring his command pennant from the damaged USS Lawrence to the USS Niagara during the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813.
The battle was a decisive American naval victory in the War of 1812, securing U.S. control over Lake Erie.
Perry's first ship, the Lawrence, was disabled by enemy fire.
His bold transfer to the Niagara allowed him to continue the fight and ultimately defeat the British squadron.
Following the victory, Perry sent a famous dispatch: "We have met the enemy and they are ours".
