his is a vintage postcard featuring the United States Marine Corps War Memorial, also known as the Iwo Jima Memorial, in Arlington, Virginia. The memorial is a massive bronze statue based on the iconic Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph of the second flag-raising on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945.
The memorial is dedicated to all Marines who have died in defense of the United States since 1775.
The entire cost of the statue was funded by donations from Marines and friends of the Marine Corps; no public funds were used.
It was dedicated on November 10, 1954, the 179th birthday of the Marine Corps.
The inscription around the base reads, "Uncommon Valor Was a Common Virtue".
