______________
The image is a postcard featuring the Washington Monument, an iconic obelisk on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
It was built to honor George Washington, the first U.S. President.
The monument is the world's tallest free-standing stone structure, standing at over 555 feet (169 meters).
Construction, made of marble, granite, and gneiss, began in 1848 but was halted for over two decades due to political issues and lack of funds; it was finally completed in 1884.
The design, by architect Robert Mills, was modeled after the obelisks of ancient Egypt.
