___________
This image captures the catastrophic eruption of Mount St. Helens on May 18, 1980.
The eruption was triggered by a magnitude 5.1 earthquake, causing the largest landslide in recorded history.
A massive lateral blast occurred first, followed by a vertical ash column that reached 80,000 feet into the atmosphere.
The event dramatically changed the volcano's appearance, reducing its summit elevation and devastating approximately 150 square miles of forest.
Ash from the eruption drifted downwind, turning day into night in parts of eastern Washington and beyond.
