_________
This image is a vintage postcard depicting the reconstructed Governor's Palace in Williamsburg, Virginia.
The original palace was completed in 1722 and served as the official residence for seven British royal governors and Virginia's first two elected governors, Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson.
It was considered a symbol of British power and was constructed to impress visitors with the Crown's wealth and authority.
George Washington briefly used the building as a hospital following the Battle of Yorktown.
The original structure was destroyed by fire in the late 1700s after the capital was moved to Richmond.
The building in the image is a meticulous reconstruction from the 1930s, funded by John D. Rockefeller Jr., based on historical patterns, including one drawn by Thomas Jefferson.
