___________
This is a vintage postcard depicting the reconstructed chamber of the House of Burgesses in the Capitol building at Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia.
The House of Burgesses was the first elected legislative assembly in the American colonies, established in 1619.
It served as the lower house of the Virginia General Assembly until 1776.
The assembly was responsible for passing laws and maintaining order in the Virginia Colony.
It played a significant role in defending the interests of colonists leading up to the Revolutionary War, notably protesting against the Stamp Act in 1765.
The original building burned down in 1781, and the current structure is a reconstruction from the 1930s.
